TIFF: The Market launches September 10 — the Toronto International Film Festival’s inaugural formal acquisition market, running Sept 10–16 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre alongside the 51st festival. Over 150 companies have confirmed participation: Goodfellas, AGC Studios, CAA, XYZ Films, WME, FilmNation, UTA, A24, Neon, Black Bear, Lionsgate, Pathé & more. More than 130 buyers from 49 countries are arriving with real money & real intent. The Canadian government invested $16.4M USD to make it happen.
The context that makes this matter: last year’s biggest TIFF acquisition was Curry Barker’s Obsession — an indie-financed midnight film picked up by Focus Features for $15M that went on to gross $442.6M globally. That is not a fluke. That is proof that the right film in the right room changes everything. The deals made in Toronto over the next 3 weeks will define independent film distribution through March 2027.
Disruptor Take
TIFF: The Market is the most significant structural change to the international acquisition landscape since Sundance opened its market — & what it signals for independent film is really encouraging. More infrastructure means more rooms where the deals that determine whether a great film gets seen actually happen. TIFF has always been a top film festival globally, but now it brings together the players so more deals can happen.

📰 Letterboxd Already Knows What’s Going to Matter at TIFF.
Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner Fjord is arriving at TIFF straight from the French Riviera. So is Ira Sachs’ The Man I Love, Florian Zeller’s Bunker (Bardem, Cruz, Dano), & Danny Boyle’s Ink, which opens the Venice Film Festival this week. The Letterboxd community has already built their TIFF watchlists — & the films lighting up their “most anticipated” feeds aren’t the prestige biopics or the franchise fare. They’re the ones that look like nothing else in the room. That’s always been the tell.
🎞️ Iconic Lines in Film
— “If they should ask if you were good friends, I’d say, ‘No, no, we were lifelong friends.’ I would give them no place to go, nothing to report, no story.”
Can you name the film? Think you know who said the line?

Record Shop Shoutout - Grimey’s New & Preloved Music
1060 E Trinity Ln · Nashville, Tennessee
Mike Grimes opened the 1st Grimey’s in a small Berry Hill home in 1999. Doyle Davis joined as co-owner in 2002 with 1 suggestion: stock new vinyl, because nobody else in Nashville was doing it right. 25 years later Grimey’s is in a converted church in East Nashville — 2 floors of records, a basement packed with used vinyl & music biographies, & murals on the outside that turn the building into a destination before you reach the door. Robert Plant has shopped these aisles. He photo-bombed a customer once & nobody planned it. That’s the kind of place Grimey’s is.

Bumbershoot
Seattle’s arts & music festival at Seattle Center has run since 1971 & still resists the formula — multi-genre, multi-disciplinary, comedy alongside visual art alongside spoken word alongside music on the same weekend. The crowd is eclectic, the curation is serious & the Pacific Northwest setting keeps the whole thing from taking itself too seriously.

Before The Odyssey. Before Oppenheimer. There was the film where Nolan 1st proved a $160M blockbuster could be built entirely around the architecture of the mind.
