Film. Music. Culture. Every week.

Curating content that is curious, innovative, purpose-driven, brilliant, edgy, citizen of the world, weird, magical, authentic and/or stylish.

After years of reviewing indie film business plans, 1 pattern is consistent enough to be a genre of its own. The marketing plan. Specifically: its absence. What follows is a faithful reconstruction of how many indie filmmakers approach the single most important factor in whether anyone ever sees their film.

  1. Marketing Budget: TBD / We’ll Sort This Out in Post

The budget has line items for every grip, every catering day, every lens rental — & a single blank field where marketing should be. The assumption is that a great film markets itself. It does not.  The best film nobody saw is still the film nobody saw.

  1. Primary Strategy: Outdoor Billboards on Sunset Blvd

A billboard in front of Chateau Marmont where industry people see it is not a smart marketing strategy. It costs more than most indie films spend on marketing total & reaches fewer people than a well-targeted social post on a Tuesday morning.

  1. “Marketing” = Events + PR + Social + Advertising + 4 Other Things, All Sharing 1 Number

The typical indie marketing line item contains 5–7 completely separate functions — each of which is a full discipline with its own strategy, expertise & resource requirements — fighting over a single budget that would be considered modest for any 1 of them alone. Events need a team. PR needs a team. Social needs a team. Lumping them together doesn’t save money. It just guarantees all of them are underfunded.

  1. The Fix: 25% of Total Film Budget, Broken Out Line by Line

Productions build detailed budgets for every department because they understand that vague spending produces vague results. Marketing deserves the same discipline. A minimum of 25% of the total production budget should be allocated to marketing — broken out into individual line items the same way the production budget is. Social media strategy. Paid digital. PR retainer. Influencer & creator partnerships. Festival strategy. Theatrical event marketing. Each 1 is its own function. Each 1 gets its own number.

Disruptor Take

At Disruptor Creations, we have an entire team that does nothing but brand integration, partnerships & digital marketing — & we bring that capability directly to the independent films we produce & partner with.  A well-executed digital marketing campaign for an indie film can drive more ticket sales from a smaller spend than a traditional P&A budget. We know where the audience actually lives, how to reach them at the moment of intent, & how to measure every dollar against real outcomes. The billboard in front of Chateau does look nice but cannot tell you any of that. We can.

Can you name the film? Think you know who said the line?

⚡Innovation & Tech: Music Platforms Are Now Competing on Who Takes the Smallest Cut

The economics of independent music distribution are shifting in the artist’s favor — & the platforms driving that shift are the ones outside the major streaming ecosystem. SoundCloud launched a direct monetization model letting independent artists keep the full ad revenue on their tracks up to a meaningful threshold, with no platform cut. Bandcamp takes 10–15% & gives artists the customer data. Even, the platform jamKIND streams on, was built around artist ownership from day 1. The race is on: platforms are now competing for independent artists the same way labels used to — by offering better terms, more transparency & less extraction.

The macro trend behind this: independent music now accounts for nearly 43% of global recorded music revenue. When the artists realize they have leverage, the platforms respond. The smart ones are responding before being asked.
