The dog days of summer moviegoing are over, and the fall slate is stacking up fast. IndieWire's rundown of the season's most anticipated releases spans festival breakouts, awards-bait auteur swings, and big swings from directors like David Leitch, whose next actioner reunites him with an ensemble cast for a bank-heist story with a social-media wrinkle. There's also room for smaller, stranger things: a Joe Swanberg comeback shot in Alaska, and a queer-cinema portrait of experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer that's already earning comparisons to the genre's best character studies.

What the list makes clear is that fall is still where cinema goes to be taken seriously, even in a year dominated by franchise sequels and legacy-quels at the box office. For every studio tentpole, there are a dozen festival-anointed titles fighting for a theatrical window before they disappear into streaming queues. That tension, between spectacle and discovery, is exactly the kind of fall we want to be talking about.

Disruptor Take

At Disruptor Creations, we think the real story of fall movie season isn't the tentpoles, it's the bottleneck. Dozens of genuinely great festival titles are competing for a shrinking number of theatrical windows before streamers scoop them up. We built our artist-friendly studio to skip that bottleneck entirely, going direct to audiences instead of waiting for a big distributor to decide a film is "commercial enough" to release wide.

Record Shop Shoutout - Breakaway Records

Austin, Texas

Open since 2008 on Austin's North Loop, Breakaway built its name on soul, jazz & hip-hop 45s before widening into international sounds, punk, psych & indie. The shop also co-founded Equipment Room, a hi-fi listening bar where its owner serves as music director. Real record shops don't just sell vinyl, they build scenes around it.
